Kallithea
Kallithea is a municipality on the island of Rhodes in Greece. It is situated in the southern part of the city of Rhodes and in the northeastern portion of the island. The municipality has a land area of 109.750 square kilometers and a 2001 population of 10,251. Kallithea’s municipal departments include Kalythies, Koskinou, Faliraki and Psinthos. Kalythies is the seat of the municipality.
Kallithea has been used as location for a number of films, among them “The Guns of Navarone,” starring Anthony Quinn, Gregory Peck and David Niven, and “Escape to Athena,” starring Roger Moore and Telly Savalas.
Kallithea is frequently visited by travelers because of its dazzling nightlife, magnificent coastal resorts, amazing spa baths and other excellent tourist attractions. Two of the most visited areas in Kallithea are Kalythies and Faliraki. At Kalythies, two caves with great archaeological importance are located, these are the Kalamonia and Aghios Georgios caves. Faliraki, the primary seaside resort village of the island of Rhodes, is famous for its sandy beach, bars and nightclubs.
The areas of Kalythies and Faliraki offer a wide variety of hotels for travelers. Tourists who like to see Rhodes’ traditional houses usually head to the village of Koskinou. Koskinou is known for its unique traditional houses with brightly painted metal or wooden doors. The doors are carved or etched with intricate designs and are surrounded by stone walls and archways. The houses are also decorated with ceramic plates and textiles. Each year, on the 17th of July, the village celebrates the name day of St. Marina with great music and dancing.
